Less than half of the ranges available for sale today are gas-operated, but many cooks still prefer them over electric stoves. Gas certainly has its benefits over electric, namely more intuitive cooktops and lower operation costs.
Of the gas ranges retailing on the market, about 60% have 5 burners on the cooktop, often with the 5th one being a large, high-BTU element. While 5-burner gas stoves aren't necessarily larger than 4-burner ones, their price is $415 higher on average. The 5-burner models have slightly higher quality ratings and users find them to be more attractive, but otherwise - their scores aren't anything to write home about. There are several exceptions, of course, and the best-rated models (shown below) all receive great cumulative scores.
